Zamalek Afrobeat Orchestra
Zamalek Afrobeat Orchestra make their debut on The Rainbow stage. Band leader is guitarist, Dimitri Barry and the line-up is mostly fellow UKZN music students, with a few seasoned pro's thrown in to bring a fresh spin on Heritage month for me.
Bheki Khoza Quartet
It has been an embarrassingly long time since Bheki Khoza, guitar in hand, commanded the stage at The Rainbow.
In August 2015 he was joined by Tu Nokwe, Melvin Peters, Mandla Zikalala and Sbu Zondi.
Prior to that, I remember back to a show in October 2014 where the quartet featured Zikalala and Babes Ndamase holding down the rhythm section, with Mncedi Kupa on piano.
It was the first such establishment of its kind in KwaZulu Natal, located in a so called “White” area under the infamous Group Areas Act, to be granted a license to sell food and sorghum beer to Africans; this, after having had to seek permission from all businesses within a 200-meter radius of the proposed site in Stanfield Lane, Pinetown.
